I can imagine it being somewhat hard to stay grounded in your gaming roots when you're receiving shovels full of money on a regular basis. Blizzard (and to a greater extent, Activision's Mission Statement) have been going against the gaming mentality for some time now. Instead of worrying if the gamers will like it, they are worried about how much cash they can milk from it. EA hit that crossroad near on 5 years ago and have suffered tremendously for it. Bioware hit that 2 years ago and you can see it in their recent offerings.

On the flipside, this arrogance for quality and gaming experience is partially what's driving people to smaller indie or f2p games as the core experience of the designer is from gaming roots and just having fun.

Hey Justin

Your totally right. Tadhgs simply making the point that when a budget gets below to a certain point it's not really enough to make a proper game as you correctly say depending on what platform and game type that number could be 250,000 or in some the bigger games we're use too making much larger.

> You need $100k, period.

That's a fairly blunt metric. $100k amounts to different degrees of resource utilization depending whereabouts you are in the world, for example the difference between San Francisco development and Ireland/England midland development is significant.

It may have been worth talking about the minimum resources that are necessary to make a game and the amount of time needed to make a game.

If you're a handful of young guys without any dependants and you're bootstrapping then you can produce something interesting on very little and build on it.

It's a different story if you're trying to convince investors as they'll want to see as much as possible for as little as possible.

IMO, for any game idea that would cost $100k, you should be bootstrapping.

BTW, I've been using the term "Social Skills Games" as a term for games where the focus is on using or developing social skills. It seems to help distinguish these games from games that just happen to be on Facebook.

I think that currently the social network is only used as secondary element in the game design (high score list, puffing & healing friends, assigning them to your mafia squad etc...)
